RUFISQUE

DAKAR - SENEGAL

Project: Accommodation for 81 military staff
Architect: Thibault Faÿ & RWT

Budget: 2.5 m€

Year: 2020

The French military base of Rufisque is expending its hosting capacity for 81 staff members working in the Airforce. The latter have given the inspiration for the concept of the building which is deployed into two wings gathering the accommodations. The connection between the wings is used as the circulation areas and lounges.

The compelling ecological considerations are based on the current French Thermal Regulation, reason why it has received specific attention for a thorough application in this tropical country.

The large overhang of the roofs brings shade to the edifice in conjunction with the sun-breakers fixed on each and every windows. The concrete structure is wrapped by a strong external insulation giving the building the same qualities of a thermos bottle, keeping the heat outside of the protected shell. The concrete structure is also used as a thermal mass to reduce the need for cooling.

Each bedroom has its own bathroom and dedicated external balcony to enjoy a private outdoor space during breaks.
